Hopefully not sounding condescending here, but I had two back-to-back interviews today and I wanted to share some lessons learned. My first tip is this: Schedule multiple interviews in the same day. This is especially helpful if the interviews are with people who serve a similar purpose for your…

More tips on interviewing. See how irresistible the mmhhm, yes, awesome, phenomenon can be. Errrrebody does it. Great tip about incorporating answers into a new question. I realized i did this a couple times during my interview with Ruben and it yielded great results.

Meet Ruben Aguilar. We had our first interview session for my Vocalo storytelling piece yesterday evening. Ruben was early and waiting for me at the Zocalito on 18th and Blue Island. We walked across the street to Yollocalli Arts Reach to set up and get comfortable.
For over 2 and a half hours we talked about the Rule of Nines, women, love, Chicago neighborhood history, his parents, the Depression, dogs, technology, God, race relations, peace, human rights, Mexico City, art, danzon, mambo, Chicago’s music scene back in the day and way too many other things to list. At one point he even quizzed me and towards the end of our interview he called me out.
As expected, technical calamity ensued and despite great restrain, I caught myself making the “mmhm”, “yes,” “really,” sounds and interrupting. This tape will definitely be a challenge to edit but I’m looking forward to it.
We are meeting again this Thursday, October 18th, which according to Ruben, is a great day to meet since it’s a multiple of nine.
Special thanks to Eric Garcia, Vanessa Sanchez and Yollocalli Arts Reach for hosting us.

Let the adventures in storytelling begin

I called up Ruben Aguilar last night and booked our first interview session for my Vocalo storytelling piece. He’s thinking big—book deals, events, movies-the whole nine yards.

He told me to make sure I bring a camera and already has music suggestions for a score. Ruben will not only be a subject in this story, he will be a participant and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Now to find a quiet location with easy access for a senior who uses a cane and a tripod for my recorder before Monday.

No mames, I’m a storyteller!

Well, maybe not yet but I’m on my way. Big ups and appreciation to Vocalo for the hookle (that’s New Mexican slang for hook-up) on the storytelling workshop. I spent the weekend mesmerized/obsessed with my recorder. Caught some pretty embarrassing moments. Can’t wait to share.
